- Aurubis invested around € 640 million to build the first secondary smelter for complex recycling material in North America.
- Commissioning of the secondary smelter is planned for the second half of 2024.
- An expansion of the plant is already under construction, meaning that Aurubis Richmond will process a total of 180,000 tonnes of complex recycling materials such as printed circuit boards and copper cables per year from 2026.

- Battery recycling is becoming increasingly important due to the expansion of e-mobility and the rapidly increasing demand for lithium-ion batteries and raw materials for their production.
- Since March 2022, a pilot plant has been in operation at the Hamburg site to extract valuable metals such as lithium, nickel, cobalt, manganese and graphite from the so-called black mass with the highest yields.
